Jason Reindl's Journey

Explore the pivotal moments that have defined Jason Reindl's career in athletics and coaching.

1998 - 2007

Journey Begins

In Grade 8, I joined the Saskatoon Track Club and began working with Coach Todd Johnston, who guided me for the next decade. During that time, I earned nine national medals across Legion U16, U18, U20, and CIS (now U Sports) competitions with the Huskies, highlighted by a 4×400 m bronze medal in 2004 and a team title in 2005. I also discovered a passion for coaching—initially to offset club fees, but quickly because I found it fun and rewarding—beginning with twice-weekly sessions in the club’s youth programming.

Through the former NCCP system, I started coach education at a young age, completing Theory 1 at 18, Theory 2 at 20, and Theory 3 at 21 through multi-sport courses offered by the Coaching Association of Saskatchewan. Often the youngest participant in the room, I did not fully appreciate the value of those experiences at the time, but I am grateful I began the process early.

I graduated from the College of Kinesiology at the University of Saskatchewan in 2006 and became fully certified in Sprints and Hurdles in 2008. Along the way, I coached in a variety of junior development settings—including Run Jump Throw, provincial U16 and U18 teams, Sask Summer Games teams, and high school and club athletes—before moving into the university ranks in 2007.

2007 - 2017

New Brunswick

Shortly after, I took a brief break from coaching in 2007–2008 to teach English in Korea for a year. I returned as Head Coach of the Saskatoon Track and Field Club, where I gained valuable experience, but my desire to explore the world remained. From 2009 to 2012, I returned to Korea to teach again—an experience that ultimately helped launch the next phase of my coaching career.

I was then hired in New Brunswick as Head Coach of the UNB Varsity Reds, while also serving as High-Performance Coach for Athletics New Brunswick and coaching with the Saint John Track Club. I also worked with the Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic and had the opportunity to support an athlete in the Canadian Rugby program. For the next five years, I simply put my head down and grinded.

During that time, I completed my Competition Development certification (now Performance Coach) in Endurance, received training in jumps, earned a Graduate Certificate in High Performance Coaching and Technical Leadership from the University of British Columbia, and completed my IAAF World Athletics Level 5 Coaches Diploma in Sprints and Hurdles. Most importantly, I learned from outstanding athletes, including 2024 Olympian Craig Thorne in the 110m hurdles, and from an exceptional mentor, Bill MacMackin. I was also incredibly fortunate during this period to meet my future wife, Rebecca.

2017 - Present

Saskatoon

In 2017, I joined the Huskies, beginning the next chapter of my coaching career. I hold an Advanced Coaches Diploma, a Master’s in High Performance Coaching and Technical Leadership from UBC, and NCCP High Performance Certification—the highest coaching credential in Canada. I have held nine Canadian national team assignments, including serving as Head Coach at the U20 Pan American and World Athletics Championships, and have delivered international coach education programs for organizations such as the Bahrain Olympic Committee.

Since 2017, I have worked with outstanding coaches and athletes at the University of Saskatchewan. During my tenure, the women’s team has won eight consecutive Canada West titles, and in 2019 both the men’s and women’s teams captured conference championships. Our teams have consistently been among the top programs in the country, highlighted by multiple national podium finishes.

I have also supported several Canadian national team athletes, and moments like the 2023 Canadian Championships—where athletes from our Saskatoon training group captured multiple national titles—stand out as proud reflections of our collective work.

Today, much of my focus is on coaching education and mentoring other coaches. As a Master Coach Developer, Learning Facilitator, and Coach Evaluator, I lead courses, conduct evaluations, and support coaches across the country. Our approach is simple, consistent, and focused—the steady work that drives lasting success.

Celebrating a Legacy of Excellence in Athletics

"A chip off the old block" or "an apple does not fall far from the tree"—these sayings perfectly capture what it means to come from a true track and field family. Jason Reindl, head coach of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Track team, exemplifies this legacy, following in the remarkable footsteps of his father, Bob, and his mother, Caren. Many of Jason’s achievements reflect the dedication, talent, and spirit he inherited from them.

Growing up in the Reindl household meant always being surrounded by sport. With my mom, Caren, and dad, Bob, both heavily involved during my youth, athletics were simply a part of everyday life. Mom coached with the Riversdale Track Club and the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, while Dad began working with Saskatchewan Athletics when I was very young. I ran in road races while Dad supported the Timex Road Race Series across the province and occasionally joined Mom for workouts with her training group. I participated in elementary school relays and continued competing through high school. Before high school, I trained with Riversdale, Century, and later the Saskatoon Track and Field Club, all while staying active in soccer, basketball, baseball, swimming lessons, and, most importantly, just being a kid.

Legacy

Bob and Caren Reindl (née Rathie) are a distinguished sports family in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, widely respected for their enduring contributions to track and field as athletes, coaches, and administrators. Their dedication, leadership, and passion for the sport have left an indelible mark on both the local and provincial athletics communities. In recognition of their outstanding achievements and lifelong commitment to sport, both have been inducted into the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame and the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame—an honour that reflects not only their competitive success, but also their profound and lasting influence on generations of athletes and the broader community.

Excellence

The Canada West Championships, hosted in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, marked another historic milestone for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s track and field program. Demonstrating exceptional depth, resilience, and competitive excellence, the Huskies captured their eighth consecutive conference championship, continuing a remarkable run of dominance within Canada West.

Adding to the celebration, head coach Jason Reindl was honored as the Canada West Women’s Coach of the Year, a well-deserved recognition of his leadership, vision, and the sustained success of the program under his guidance.

Achievements

Brother Kyle and myself - High School champions

During my formative years, I earned nine national medals across Legion U16, U18, U20, and CIS (now U Sports) competitions as a proud member of the Huskies program. These experiences provided invaluable opportunities to compete alongside and against some of the country’s best young athletes, helping to refine my skills and build confidence on the national stage. Among the most memorable highlights were capturing a bronze medal in the 4×400 m relay at the 2004 national championships and playing a meaningful role in securing a national team title in 2005—achievements that stand as proud milestones and helped lay a strong foundation for my continued growth and lifelong involvement in the sport of track and field.

Coach at work...
Coach Reindl

His father, a renowned coach, and his mother, a steadfast supporter, instilled in him values of dedication and perseverance. Under Jason's leadership, the Huskies have achieved remarkable success, reflecting his commitment to excellence and his family's legacy.

Jason Reindl has been a Chartered Professional Coach since 2008 and currently serves as Head Coach of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Track and Field and Cross-Country program, a role he has held since 2017. He has represented Team Canada on nine occasions: at the 2017 World Universiade Games (FISU) in Taipei, Taiwan; the 2018 IAAF World Junior (U20) Championships in Tampere, Finland; as Head Coach for Team Canada at the 2019 Pan American U20 Championships in San José, Costa Rica; as Head Coach at the 2021 World U20 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya; as Head Coach at the 2022 World U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia; at the 2022 NACAC Championships in Freeport, Bahamas; at the 2024 World U20 Championships in Lima, Peru; at the 2025 FISU University Games in Bochum, Germany; and at the 2026 NextGen European Tour (location to be determined).

Jason Reindl attended the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France, as a personal coach with the Canadian national team, fully accredited by the Canadian Olympic Committee. He has served as a head or assistant coach on more than a dozen provincial teams and has worked as a consultant for a wide range of sports organizations, including rugby, soccer, hockey, basketball, football, and volleyball. Jason also delivered the NCCP International Level 4 Workshop Module 7, High Performance Analysis, to the Bahrain Olympic Committee’s coaching education program on two occasions on behalf of the Coaching Association of Canada. In addition, he has presented extensively on topics such as long-term athlete development, performance analysis, athletic development, and technical considerations across all event areas in track and field.
